San Francisco’s weather has a reputation, and it’s earned. Between the fog, the wind, and the microclimates that make one neighborhood sunny while another is soaked in mist, timing your flight right can be the difference between a postcard view and a flight through the clouds. Here’s what the seasons actually look like from the air, so you can book accordingly.
Summer (June–August): Peak Season, But Not Peak Visibility
Summer is when most visitors show up, and it’s also when San Francisco’s famous fog is at its thickest. Morning flights in June and July can run into low clouds and fog that haven’t burned off yet, especially near the Golden Gate Bridge itself. The good news: it usually clears by afternoon, and even a foggy morning flight has its own moody, cinematic quality that a lot of guests genuinely love. Just don’t expect guaranteed blue skies if you fly early in the day.
Fall (September–November): The Best Flying Weather of the Year
This is the one locals wait for. September and October bring some of the clearest, warmest days of the entire year. The fog that dominates summer mornings tends to burn off completely, leaving crisp views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the full skyline with none of the summer haze. If you want the clearest, most reliably photogenic flight, this is genuinely the best window to book.
Winter (December–February): Fewer Crowds, Surprisingly Clear Days
Winter is San Francisco’s rainy season, but between storms, the air is often at its cleanest; rain washes the haze out of the sky, and the days right after a storm passes can deliver some of the sharpest, clearest views you’ll get all year. It’s also the slowest season for tourism, which means more availability and shorter waits for the tour and time slot you actually want. The tradeoff is real: more days get affected by weather, so build in some flexibility.
Spring (March–May): The Transitional Sweet Spot
Spring splits the difference. The fog hasn’t fully rolled in yet, the hills of Marin are green (sometimes with wildflowers), and the days are noticeably longer than winter without summer’s crowds. It’s a solid, underrated choice if fall doesn’t fit your schedule.

A Quick Note on Weather and Your Booking
Because we’re flying real aircraft in real Bay Area conditions, flight times may occasionally change due to weather, maintenance, or temporary airspace restrictions. It’s not common, but it’s worth knowing going in, especially if you’re booking a tight window around a specific event like a proposal or anniversary. Building in a little flexibility on your dates, especially outside of fall, is never a bad idea.
