Are Helicopter & Seaplane Tours Good for Kids? A Family Guide

If you’re planning a family trip to San Francisco and wondering whether a helicopter or seaplane tour actually works with kids in tow, here’s the short answer: yes, and it’s easier than you’d think. Here’s what to actually expect, straight from our own policies, before you book.

Is There a Minimum Age?

There’s no formal minimum age for either our seaplane or helicopter tours. Infants ages 0-2 fly free when seated on a parent’s lap; no extra ticket required. Children ages 3 and up fly at the standard per-person tour rate, like everyone else. So whether you’re bringing a toddler or a teenager, there’s a way to make it work.

What About the Noise?

Helicopters and seaplanes are loud, louder than most people expect, especially for little ears. We have a limited number of ear protection headsets on board, but if you’re flying with an infant or toddler, we’d recommend bringing your own noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs sized for kids. It makes a real difference in how comfortable the flight feels for them.

What About Weight Limits?

This one is worth knowing upfront. Because our aircraft are small, passenger weight affects balance and performance, so there are real per-seat limits: 260 lbs per seat on seaplane tours, and 220 lbs per seat with a 500 lbs total limit for the whole group on helicopter tours. We don’t weigh guests at check-in, but we do ask that you keep these limits in mind when booking, and let us know ahead of time if you have any questions about how your family’s group fits. A quick call before booking is always easier than a surprise on the day of your flight.

Tips for a Smoother Family Flight

A few things that make a real difference when you’re flying with kids:

  • Bring kid-sized headphones or earplugs, especially for anyone under 3. It’s the single easiest thing you can do to make the noise less overwhelming.
  • Talk them through it beforehand. A quick, simple explanation of what to expect (the noise, the liftoff feeling, the views) goes a long way for a first-time flyer of any age.
  • Everyone gets a window. Our aircraft have wide windows all around, so you don’t need to worry about someone getting stuck in a middle seat with nothing to see.
  • Consider the shorter tours for younger kids. A 20-minute flight is a much easier ask for a 4-year-old than a 40-minute one.

Which Tour Is Best for Your Family?

For younger kids or first-time flyers, the shorter Alcatraz & City Sites tour is a great low-commitment option, with all the highlights in about 20 minutes. For families who want more time in the air and don’t mind a longer flight, the Golden Gate Helicopter Adventure or Greater Bay Area Seaplane Tour give you more of the Bay without stretching much past 40 minutes.

If your family is bigger, or you’d simply rather not share the cabin with strangers, a private charter is worth considering, up to 6 passengers on a private seaplane, keeping everyone together for the whole flight. And if you’ve got older kids who can handle a bit of a hike, the Muir Woods & Aerial Adventure combo pairs a walk through the redwoods with your choice of a seaplane or helicopter flight afterward; a full day out for a family that wants more than just the flight itself.
